The Leadership Institute Experience

The Leadership Institute has four distinct elements.

1. Leadership Retreats:

The opening and wrap-up leadership retreats are key elements of the program and are mandatory for graduation.

· The opening retreat is an informative two-day program that creates an experiential learning environment that begins the developmental process for class members. The retreat focuses on self and community awareness, leadership skills, and team building.

· The wrap-up retreat is the culminating event that solidifies months of learning and activity.

2. Intensive Program Days:

Experienced professionals, state and local elected officials, community, and business/industry leaders facilitate nine intensive program days that address issues related to:

History

Criminal Justice

Technology

State Government

Education

Federal Impact

Health and Human Services

Quality of Life

Class sessions provide participants with a broad overview and insight into the critical issues facing the Virginia Peninsula.

3. Community Service Project:

This project is a group selected hands-on activity. It will involve all aspects of project management including fund raising. The project is designed to:

· Address a current community issue

· Allow for practice in personal and group dynamics

· Be a living laboratory to apply newly learned leadership skills

· Enable the class to function as a cohesive unit

· Have a positive impact upon the Virginia Peninsula

4. Board Partnership:

This program element is designed to broaden insight into the needs of the community through actively participating on a Board, Commission, or Committee. The program also fosters understanding and insight into the inner workings of these important bodies.

Structure and Time Commitment

The Leadership Institute begins in September and ends in May with graduation in June. It consists of an evening orientation, a two-day retreat and nine full-day sessions.

If accepted to the Leadership Institute, students must agree to honor their employer's commitment to the program by adhering to the attendance policy. The following elements are mandatory:

  • Attendance at the orientation and retreats
    Participation in the class project
Participation on a Board, Commission, or Committee
Attendance at a minimum of 7 of the 9 program days (or 56 of 72 hours)
